Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2004-11-04 | ||
Outside-jazz trio with an accessible sound. Malaby's playing touches the same free/improv bases as Tim Berne or possibly Ornette Coleman (who's covered on Track 1). The band's sound is solidly jazzy, with some nice group interplay during solos. Some of the compositions carry elements of traditional Mexican music, something Malaby's been trying out to honor his Mexican-American background. Malaby's been around for a while but isn't that well known. He's got two great veterans backing him up: Drew Gress (bass) and Paul Motian (drums). 1- Stumbling midtempo Ornette cover; nice bop feel 2- Easygoing, meandering feel. Not too slow. 3- Midtempo and slowish 4- Slow, a bit romantic 5- Sneaky bass riffs. Gets into a nice jam. 6- Slow, dramatic melody, like a Mexican film soundtrack 7- Fairly fast straight bop, nicely jumping 8- Gently cooking, mid/fast 9- Spare and free-floating, with some choppy fast playing |
