Cataract – With Triumph Comes Loss (Metal Blade)
Metalcore, pure and simple. Huge, heavy guitar sounds with a million riffs (though they all sorta sound the same), vocals you can almost understand, nice breakdowns and little variation between tracks. From Switzerland yet they sound a lot like the German metalcore bands, especially Heaven Shall Burn. These guys are actually one of the older metalcore bands having been around for about 6 years. This is their 3rd release. One refreshing thing about this record is that while most of the metalcore scene seem to be imploding, with most of the bands feeling like they have to sing all pretty to get on MTV, this band keeps it to screams, relentless and heavy.
**1. Starts with a big scream and a quick guitar riff and you can just feel the on coming pummeling. Sure enough the mid paced head banging kicks in. Very thrash-y with a small breakdown.
2. Starts slower with simple guitar run. This reminds me of Hatebreed a little bit with the vague, angst-y lyrics and more NYC style chugging guitar.
**3. More of a metal sound with a guitar riff right out of Testament’s catalog and double bass drums. Emo style lyrics that come across a little bit silly (don’t they always?) being screamed all angry.
**4. After a quiet beginning comes a huge scream and a quick riff very much like track 1. A bit faster. Anti-war lyrics but with a bit more understanding of what’s going on.
5. Ha, funny Slayer-like riff, double bass drums, all mixed with some hardcore guitars.
6. Interesting slow paced riff that’s almost a gallop with the other guitar doing a techie run.
7. Quiet vocal sample to begin into a big slow riff.
8. Starts quick and faster overall.
9. Another more hardcore track with the NYC sound like Hatebreed.
10. Straightforward, short head banger.
**11. Guitar feedback fades in. This track is almost twice as long as any of the others. Sounds like Slayer. Stays slow for a while with the vocals way up front. Big breakdown, with samples, that chugs away and slowly fades out, turning to feedback. The track ends with about a minute of feedback.
Good stuff. -mph
