Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2004-11-04 | ||
Mainstream jazz: B-3 organ and jazz guitar plus drums. A soulful brew with some really nice playing. Relaxed sound overall, even when they really get cooking. Chris Foreman on organ is quite good (and blind since birth!) The guitarist is Bobby Broom, the late '70s protege of Miles Davis/Dr. John fame. Overall a very '50s/'60s retro sound, down to some classic pop tunes, which are the weaker tracks IMHO ... although "Raspberry Beret" comes across with heart and gusto. "Willow Weep for Me" is played in a fast, toe-tapping style. Joe Henderson's "Granted" is another fast-paced treat. The band has been together since 1992, and since 2003 they've held down a weekly gig at the Green Mill, one of Chicago's more prominent jazz venues (located around the touristy downtown area). |
