Xasthur, like fellow Californians Leviathan, Crebain and Draugar - is a one-man, highly original black metal master of mayhem. Xasthur is Malefic who seems rather influened by the early works of Burzum (minus Varg’s stupid ideology).
The vocals here become yet another instrument. They come off super-distorted yet something to marvel at within the total sound of this album. It’s pretty creepy sounding stuff. Whatever you do, DO NOT go on walk alone late at night whilst listening to this CD - it will could horrify your soul permanently.
((((1)))) Creepy yet majestic ambience, sounding a bit like something off of the Cold Meat Industries label. Something like (old) Mortiis meets In Slaughter Natives.
((2)) Hornet’s nest-like buzzing guitars, waves of distant pained vocals, the drums are a singular unit thudding along in a constant wave of nothingness. This one isn’t good minus aside from the dedication to utterly insane repetition.
((((3)))) Strange floating bass lines that don’t even match the speedy guitar & drumming tempos. The bass almost sounds like the Cocteau Twins. The crux is more distant vocals with a varied riffing all of which are done rather well.
(((((4))))) Straight-ahead blackend orcish doom, totally, bleak hopeless stuff that's worth the "voidward".
((((5)))) Epic piece with mellow ambient intro then a nice slow march ‘ala (S.F.’s cult BM band) Weakling with fucked up “unholy lurking beast” vocals amongst bit of evoking feedback and washes of noisy guitars.
(((((6)))))) Slow, strange off-kilter tempos. Desolate & beautiful repetitive. The last two minutes are sheer “minimalist metal” brilliance Lose yourself in this one---NOW!
((((7)))) Slow, creeping grimness from some other hellish realm. Great & catchy (yes, catchy) bleak doomy riffing ‘ala Ved Budes Ende, Blut Aus Nord.
((((8)))) Amazing, creepy atmospheric etheral darkness wicked spoken & growling, rumbling vocals mixed together.
(((((9))))) Absolutely beautiful levels of desparation & misery! Slowwww doomed, epic waves despodency. HUGELY recommended if you like ANY form of dark music.
((((10)))) Sullen, waves of neo-classic somber expressions. In the darkend field of Arcana, old Mortiis and In The Nursery.
