Album Review
Craig Matsumoto
Reviewed 2004-12-18

Duets of bass and soprano sax, with some of McPhee's composed pieces and several improvisations. These are mostly relaxed jams, with a warm down-home air (by free-jazz metrics, anyway). Very nice.

The sequel to Duval's "Rules of Engagement" CD with Mark Whitecage.

1- Bright and jumbled; fast
2- Fast, athletic sax. Slow and peaceful later.
3- Slowish with lots of tangly playing. Artfully abstract.
4- Slow bluesy stroll. In track #5, McPhee explains this song was inspired by a church bombing in Birmingham.
6- Sad, slow
7- "Amazing Grace" played straight and slow.
8- Calm, meditative
9- Chugging beat, a soulful midtempo
10- Sax solo: Sparse, slow.
11- Dirge. Dark bowed bass.
