Album Review
Reviewed 2005-01-27
A smoky, calm trip-hop EP (four originals plus remixes) on Seattle-based Buttermilk Records. Take's fourth effort, it features full soundscapes but lacks the imagination of other instrumental hip hop artists like DJ Shadow and DJ Frane. Still, the samples are endearing and the mood consistent, producing a steady release with some understated gems.

Note: Endings of most tracks have a couple seconds of dead air -- watch out.
Sweet: 4, 6, 9
FCC: 3

1. Ringing in yo ear, boom-chick drum, nice midway breakdown, abrupt end.
2. Chimes, square 4/4 beat.
3. FCC (...but ILL sampling/scratch, lackadaisical soundscape -- totally sic track. Damn.)
**4. Catchy hook, jazzy twisting samples, soundtrackish interlude.
5. Airy Organ, distorted vocals.
**6. Mr. Rogers meets DJ Shadow prologue, and the rest of the track delivers. Lots going on but manages to hold it together: samples, male vox, piano, big band background, crickets.
7. Kickin' rhythm, loopy feel, brushes on the snare drum.
8. Strong vocals, growling synths and upfront sounds
*9. Capable sampling, atmospheric background.
10. Xylophone, sax, flute, flat/uninspired beat.
