The Electric Wizard – We Live (TMC)
Big, fuzzy, heavy, doom and stoner rock. The slow fade in of feedback from multiple guitars on the first track into a riff that’s heavy and slow gives a great tip off to the rest of the CD. Think Sleep, Cathedral, and Orange Goblin. Detuned guitars and doom! This album has the addition of ex-13, ex-Sourvein guitarist Liz Buckingham and a new drummer, who is from Iron Monkey. The band has been around since 1993 and this is their 5th album. The tracks are often long. This is HEAVY!
1. Long, slow, and heavy. The vocals are up front in the mix and are somewhat annoying. The guitars hold the track together, often playing completely different things. One will be playing heavy slow riffs while the other swirls, feedbacks and solos around. Towards the end of the track they do pick up the pace slightly.
**2. Opening sample and a huge oppressive riff to begin. Pure doom. The guitar play a nice melodic riff during the chorus.
**3. Damn listen to the heavy fuzzy guitars in the opening chords. While heavy, the melody is also very pretty, like Pelican.
4. An attempt and singing. The track is also faster. The music is still heavy but the like a lot of other doom and stoner rock the vocals get in the way.
**5. Slow and oppressive. Pretty much pure doom with its depressing lyrics and slow heavy guitars.
**6. The longest track at over 15 minutes. This goes through a lot of changes but remains mostly slow and heavy. Effects (echo) on the vocals.
Good stuff. -mph
