Top notch dark alt folky western bluesy, mixing alt.country of Wilco w/ spice of Gun Club and dark 4AD’isms of Red House Painters, Tindersticks, Tarnation. Stripped down banjo, pedal steel, guitar, male/female vocals with dark lyrics, simple yet lush. From Detroit, produced by Warren DeFever and Brendan Benson. Class AAA stuff.
1) brief intro, 4AD
2) slow bluesy start builds to epic western feel
3) front porch folk western, instant classic
4) title track, brushed drums, western swing, dark themed
5) upbeat classic country feel, answer/call vocs w/ undeniable chemistry beautiful love song w/ twists
6) swing blues feel, like a Gun Club song
7) simple sweet od to the past, family
8) FCC: slow waltzy dark verson of Jack on Fire (by Gun Club, or at least popularized by them), great song with one “fuck”: sung when woman comes in “…then I will fuck you til you die”
9) minor upbeat, strange song about dumpster diving, great fun, metaphors
10) mid, rather epic sound, dark as hell lyrics, awesome
11) epic again
12) dark campfire howlin song shifts into romantic waltz at end, then ~1min silence followed by “hidden track” – low fi AM country radio feel (self indulgent warren defever stuff)
