Mal Waldron / Archie Shepp – Left Alone Revisited

Soulful, tender renditions of songs made famous by Billie Holiday from two masters. Shepp’s breathy sax stands in for the vocals and Waldron provides an unobtrusive backdrop. I like how they capture the spare melancholy of the originals (even the upbeat ones). All tracks are superb, so pick your favorite. I liked #1, with its wild sax solo & the quietly sad #8 best.
