Field recordings from the late 1950’s. The music is fascinating, mostly wailing voices backed by flute, percussion, and/or strings. Good notes about the instruments, the songs, and Bedouins. I especially liked #9 which is the sound of a wooden mortar & pestle grinding coffee (see cover). 1. Wailing vox & lute. Sounds like a young boy. *2. Sweet & light instrumental for flute/drum. *3. Uptempo, girlish voices, claps/cymbals/perc. 4. Rababa (1 stringed fiddle) & male vox. Whining, midtempo. 5. Male voice & hand claps. Bright & sort of happy *6. A fast dance w/buzzing flute/vocals. Gets even faster. Wow. 7. Male voices, call-response. Midtempo, sort of hypnotic. 8. Rather mournful, male voice w/rababa. Interesting. *9. Percussion as they grind coffee. Wonderful! 10. A love song. Male call-response w/rababa. Midtempo. 11. Another coffee grinder, w/vocals & rababa. Lively. 12. Solo pipe, then vocal in honor of the King. Relaxed. 13. Vox/pipe/claps. Midtempo & kind of happy. 14. Vox/rababa. Mostly slowish. |
