Clem Snide – End of Love
The singer’s very distinct twangy voice is the centerpiece for all these songs, and features very prominently in the mix. Music has a country/folk feel, with lots of side players (from bands like Crooked Fingers, Lambchop, Elysian Fields) rotating on everything from trombone, saxophone, violin, banjo, etc. Witty lyrics about everything from religion, life, death, German hip hop, to Lucille Ball. The songs are relaxed and comfortable, at their best when they’re playful and fun. My picks: 6, 8, 9, 11
1- upbeat, a little quirky, full sounding title track
2- slow, winsome, do I hear banjo?
3- methodical, plodding
4- reminds me of r.e.m.’s more countryish outings
5- angelic fem backup, has a light airy feel
*6- shuffling cash-like beat, ironic lyrics about finding Christ come off both funny and sad
7- more religious irony
*8- very fun. waits-like oddness, falsetto backup vocals, punches of horns
*9- calm and quiet, just guitar and clear voice, a little girl playfully sings “la la las,” intimate and charming
10- fem backup singing, relaxed and effortless, ends with 27 seconds of silence
*11- fun, light, playful, silly, with simple steady beat
