Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings "Naturally" – Hot damn!! This is soul! Ms. Jones brings you her 2nd full length backed by the Dap-Kings. Yes this is a new album, not from the 60's, and this is how soul music should sound. No casio keyboards in sight. Solid bass lines with rhythm guitar, a great horn section, and tasteful string arrangements. Add Ms. Jones' smoky sexy vocals that can be both sweet and tough and you've got yourself a beautiful funky soul album. Some songs are a bit funkier and some are great slow soul ballads. Think James Brown, Ruby Johnson, and other Stax artists. The original songs are fun and timeless and the cover of Woody Guthrie's “This Land Is Your Land” is not to be missed. Every song on here is great so pick one out and play it.
My Picks: 1, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10
Katie P. 3/8/05

1)Laid back fast midtempo groove. Faster guitar fingerings and solid horn section. Nice soulful funk. Great smoky sexy female vocals.
2)Vocals and drums kick it off. Bouncy groove. Again some solid horns make it a great soulful funky tune. Hot! Love the lyrics too - “NBL and he TCB” Translation – he's a natural born lover and he takes care of business.
3)Starts off with a little “skit” piece with Sharon Jones and Lee Fields. Sweet soul duet about two people struggling with their love. Slow and beautiful with guitar strumming and great strings. Damn!!
4)Uptempo bouncy funk! Great bass line with nice horn hits. Tough and sassy female vocals.
5)Slow dance time. Beautiful sweet soul ballad. Grab someone special and dance. Subtle horns and strings are just perfect.
6)Solid fast midtempo groove. A little laid back and fun although the lyrics are a bit sad. Great horn hits and a nice trumpet solo.
7)Wow!! This is perhaps the coolest version of “This Land Is Your Land” EVER!! Tough, raw, angry, hard groove with plenty of funk attitude. Great horns on this. Damn!
8)Fast bass line with a nice bounce. Fast midtempo. Tough and sassy.
9)Nice laid back midtempo. Cool song about eating fresh fish – yummm!! Much in the tradition of soul music about delicious soul food.
10)Soul ballad. Strings along with slow guitar strumming and nice horn hits. Great love song.
