Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2005-04-23
Gulcher continues its amazing string of obscure re-releases with this Indiana band, 1977-1980. The endearing story of punk rock rapture, making rock and fucking roll when nobody cared but you. And it didn’t matter anyway. These guys take their inspiration from the Pistols, Clash, other mid 70’s UK bands but they end up with a distinctly Ramones melodic sense and fun boppy tone, especially toward the end of this collection where it borders on Modern Lovers surf punk. Bad timing, loss of members, contributed to their dissolution and fade from memory.

1) basic early 70’s punk feel, low-fi, mid paced
2) melodic simple punk
3) off-key leads
4) funny hook, Ramones’ish fun punk
5) 50’s sock hop Ramones punk
6) FCC
7) FCC
8) more 50’s melodic Ramones punk
9) “the American dream” simple protest rock
10) melodic sock hop rock
11) London reggae/ska post punk feel, spoof
12) basic rock, Beach Boys melodies
13) bouncy rock
14) driving “doo-wop”
15) upbeat melodic garage punk
16) dead boys feel, good punk
17) boogie punk
18) live, melodic ballad punk
19) hard driving, good low end
20) blues rock swagger
21) tamer “new wave” rock feel
22) happy rock’n roll feel, Beach Boys licks
23) swingy upbeat, happy almost jangly
24) FCCs (surfy melodies have matured into some of their stronger if less punk material)
25) low-fi take on Take Me to the River, popularized by the Talking Heads at the time
