Baroness – First (Hyperrealist)
A mix of heavy sounds. Some stoner rock, some dbeat hardcore, some metalcore, and some doom. Dare I also say, because of the bombastic guitar solos I can see a classic rock influence, but don’t worry they quickly throw in a blast beat and start screaming. From Savanna, Georgia and produced by Phillip of Kylesa. They have some of the big Kylesa sound (just add more prog rock and doom), in particular the vocal delivery is a lot like Kylesa. All 3 tracks are great!
**1. Starts with noise and feedback and once this gets going you quickly see how hard their sound is to place. It’s melodic, but heavy, with riffs and a prog rock feel. The first couple of minutes remind me of the Fucking Champs yet a hardcore band. They go through lots of changes in this track. About 4 minutes in they slow down with a big heavy sound and then they return with a complete stoner rock riff.
**2. Melodic simple guitar riff to begin into a quick black metal guitar and blast beats. Shit! Then quick hardcore punk with a dbeat sound. Dual vocals a lot like Kylesa mixed with some guitar noodling.
**3. Metal guitar yet mellow to begin. Reminds me of post rock just heavier, it has a slight indie rock sound. This track is more melodic but still heavy.
Great stuff! -mph
