Nagl / Bernstein / Akchote / Jones – Big Four

These four musicians were brought together by Werner Uehlinger of the Hat Hut record label in tribute to the legendary Big Four sessions with Sidney Bechet and Muggsy Spanier in 1940. The idea was not to rerecord the original album, but to try and recreate the collaborative atmosphere of the original sessions with a modern quartet. They definitely succeed in their goal.. this quartet works extremely well together and the session has a relaxed, comfortable feel. Almost all the compositions are Bernstein/Nagl originals and have a throwback sound while getting pretty abstract (especially Akchote’s guitar work). This is really amazing stuff, all tracks are subperb. Play it now!!

1. Quiet intro with echoes of hot jazz at the very end
2. Light horns with abstract guitar solo
*3. Slow start leads to hot swing
*4. Bluesy standard
*5. Playful swing
**6. Pensive jazzy swing
*7. Skittery start turns to jazz
**8. Sultry tangoey lullaby evolves to group improv.. beautiful
*9. Old school standard played pretty straight
*10. Speedy, with a jumpy light touch
**11. Creeping disjoint melody
12. Soft abstract swing
13. Lame dub remix of #8.
