Album Review

More great stuff from Canadian electronica label Sublight Records!

Drill/drum & bass hybrid with an old school sound. The album presents a nice variety of approaches to fast electronica, with some mellow interludes. Strongly channels old Squarepusher, with touches of old Aphex Twin and especially Luke Vibert. That isn't to say that this is derivative – Flashbulb definitely develops his own sound. But this still sounds somewhat familiar... and to be honest, that's not a bad thing.

Bangin' yet intelligent stuff... Highly Recommended!

- Captain Dee, May 2005

1. Subdued solo piano composition. Elegant, good story music? (2:02)
*2. Crazed Squarepusher-ish electric bass(?) melody over blazin' drill & bass beat, and later ambience. (4:17)
3. Totally insane beat, sinister high-pitched melody, electric guitar chords. (3:11)
*4. Electro/wobbly synths, epic high-floating melody, dope thumping beat... like being in some crazy videogame? (3:29)
**5. Ambient interlude, gorgeous rewind-y nostalgia. Abrupt end. (1:17)
*6. Extremely Squarepusher-ish electric bass solos and familiar old-school samples over steady loud drums and slightly spooky ambience. (2:58)
***7. Bangin' drum & bass beat w/ drill & bass leanings, happy ethereal melody. Like an exciting ride through space? Killer!!! Blends into next track. (3:07)
8. Guitar strums, loud downtempo beat, electronic echoes. Ends with totally lame, out-of-place male vocals about trees. (1:48)
9. Tweaked out guitar melody. Deep sustained organ-ish bass. Breakbeat-ish. Abrupt end. (2:25)
10. Quiet beat boxing over string plucks and ambience. (1:55)
**11. More old school samples, classic drill & bass sound. Cheerful piano melody. Luke Vibert-ish. Fun stuff! (4:25)
*12. Pulsing synths, fast blippy beat, deep bass, bloopy melody. Samples vocals ("It's a beautiful day outside"). (5:08)
13. Sharp metallic reverberations, electronic squeaks, strong mid-tempo beat, slow atmospheric melody/ambience. (2:36)
*14. This one just screams old Squarepusher. Wobbly bass solos and drum hit madness over sustained organ background. Slows down later. (2:35)
*15. Pensive keyboard chords (and later quiet strings) over uptempo, forceful blippy beat, arpeggios of spacey beeps. (3:36)
*16. Cheerful piano meanderings, with a low-quality sample sound. (1:25)
***17. Echo-y magical chime riffs, rompin' in-your-face drum beat, jazzy vocal snippets, rumbling bass. Trippy melody reminds me of something out of Zelda 2. Very reminiscent of Amen Andrews. Great interlude with a psychologist talking about relaxation over piano chords. Fantastic shit!!! (7:56)
**18. FCC: "Motherfucker" sample twice. Complex but powerful tweaked out beat shifts around. Mix of island-ish melody w/ some quiet sax samples and a more videogame-ish tune. Some SICK jams here!! (8:43)
