Grachan Moncur III Octet - Exploration This disc features slick, modern big band arrangements for some of Moncur’s compositions from both his Blue Note albums as well as some of his more adventurous stuff. The arrangements and bandleading are taken care of by Mark Masters, and Moncur himself plays more of a “special guest” role. Unfortunately, Moncur’s playing has been limited recently by health problems, and his work here seems a bit tentative. Interesting stuff nonetheless. *1. Big band start, interesting harmonies 2.
