Terrific sax-bass-drums trio with an energetic out-jazz sound. Some tracks do include composed parts but are mostly lengthy open soloing, staying within a jazzy sound (Jimmy Lyons is a good comparison, or local hero Marco Eneidi). Sax leads the way, of course. These guys have played the Boston area for 25+ years, an enthusiastic live crowd adds to the spirit on this recording. |
Mainstream jazz star Joe Lovano (!) guests on #6 and 7, showing a nice talent for free blowing. Go, Joe!
ALL TRACKS SEGUE a little bit, so watch for abrupt endings.
1- Easygoing start, gets abstract and chaotic
2- Bass solo, rolls into:
3- Sax returns, perky and midtempo. Crash ending.
4- Fluttery 50-second piece
5- Meditative: quiet but energetic. Caution: silence near end
6- Fast attack, knotty two-sax soloing. Nice quiet middle.
7- Sunny and happy, even Calypso-loungy near the end.
8- "Tribute to the New England Patriots." Crowd favorite. Quickly gets into a mid/fast bopping jam. After bass and drum solos, turns into a party song with the crowd shouting ... "football?" can't tell, but they're sure having fun.
A word on track #8 ... The Fringe plays regularly at the Zeitgeist, an art gallery in Cambridge, Mass. -- on MONDAY nights. Hence, they compete with football for about 1/4 of the year, a fact that led to the "Tribute" being born.
