Your Imaginary Friend Reviewed 2005-04-28 | ||
DC band creates a heady mix of psyche, stoner, and heavy assed rock. Drums, Hammond organ and fuzz bass topped with a mad-man on vocals (though this time around the girl on the keys sings up front on few to much pleasure). The Hammond and fuzz bass (replacing any six stringed instruments) gives Apes their distinct sound that always brings to my mind the glee and headnodding stoniness of better Deep Purple. This is their 3rd or 4th release, the others all KZSU faves, and it has so many fresh moments its clear that these simians are evolving in a spectacular way. For fans of Lost Sounds, Killing Joke. All tracks are great, clean, pick any (and don't miss them live, especially in a small venue like the Hemlock). 1) slow fade-in of voices leads to slow tribal tom beat w/ strange pitch-changed vocs and crazy flute, brief intro-like segment of a song 2) midpaced stoney headnodding epic Apes 3) strange dialog intro ("busdriver"), then upbeat feel 4) hammond onslaught midpaced pounding beat 5) the girl sings this through retro phase shifting, this has a 60's english psyche feel, no drums and regal in tone 6) big drum beats, channeling a more "typical" rock feel 7) spookier, think Lost Sounds for sure 8) heavy yet funky upbeat, cool vocal echo midway, just plain good 9) big tribal beat, clavier/harpsichord organ gives regal tone to this, interesting 10) cool Killing Joke style beat and fuzz bass, funky lead bass stylings, hip grinding fun 11) pensive w/ "piano", different and strange 12) fades in, headnodding trademark Apes feel, after 3 min it does an upbeat shift w/ the girl taking on melodic vocals 13) girl sings lead at first, pretty contrast to the music, other tracks, this is a melodic tune that takes on a lullaby-folk quality |
