Crazy piano and drums -- instrumentals this time, vs. Thollem's song-oriented disk (filed under Thollem/Rivera too). Thollem McDonas definitely has jazz piano chops but he twists them through his own diagonal lens, creating an aggressive, lurching, fast style.
My one complaint would be that some tracks sound like exercises or warmup rambling, rather than an attempt to really say something. Overall, though, Thollem has a unique sound that deserves a listen.
Tracks go in phases so don't be fooled by pauses: 1,5, 6,17
- Halting fast stumble, like an intro collage
- Fast ringing cyclical riff, then low notes
- Hectic, cartoony.
- Crashing, then a long cooldown
- Delicate fast patter
- Simple pitter-patter exercises
- Big and rolling, one chord
- Slow, dramatic
- Quieter but fast w/sparkly moments.
- Ultrafast pinpoint w/serious interlude
- Gets fast and vicious
- Tumbling, with a couple bouncing pauses
- Long waves, they come and go.
- Yes, it is.
- Small splashes. Starts w/applause
- Fast and jazzy. Drum solo intro.
- The vocal track: Rambling, twisty. Strong rolling piano. Goes in phases
