TENORES DI BITTI – “Caminos de Pache”
Dunya/Felmay, 2004
ITALY – Male polyphonic quartet from Sardinia. The leading group in the unusual a tenore style for 30 years, they have reportedly made fans of Frank Zappa, Ornette Coleman and Peter Gabriel. This is loud singing, with strangely beautiful harmonies once you get past the harshness of it. Go on, try it!
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12
1. 2:36 – upbeat melody with a sort of bounce in it, neat changes
2. 7:55 – slow, a series of drones broken up with pauses
3. 4:25 – very even, gently rocking rhythm, many key changes
4. 4:11 – vibrato solos alternate with slow harmonic drones
5. 5:14 – happy accordion makes this sound like a drinking song
6. 4:54 – wow, the harmony sounds like a human hurdy-gurdy!
7. 3:19 – a robotic, mechanical sound, extremely even throughout
8. 3:04 – another slow one, much like #4, but with dramatic pauses
9. 3:18 – slow and more melodic than most, with big pauses
10. 4:45 – nice melody here, with big pauses and an epic, heroic edge to it
11. 3:27 – upbeat and restless/busy, much like #1
12. 4:38 – relaxed; launeddas (multi-reed instrument) makes it pleasantly folksy
