JUAN-CARLOS FORMELL – “Cemeteries & Desire”
Narada, 2005
CUBA/USA – Short solo recordings: just voice and guitar. Cuban defector Formell, who has always cultivated a unique vision of Latin music while working with the most respected names in the business, here gives us a warm and intimate album with a poetic air, using the twin inspirations of female Cuban archetypes and New Orleans cemeteries! (the disc was recorded in N’awlins) It’s a standout record in all respects, fitting a variety of moods. Anyone who plays acoustic music at KZSU, “world” or not, ought to give this one a listen. Simple, unhurried, wonderful music.
No duds here. FO’S PICKS: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 11
1. slow & wistful, w/electric bass
2. warm, upbeat & romantic
3. a happy, almost Brazilian feel
4. seductive after-hours dance
5. gentle, flowing, tropical feel
6. quiet, tender instrumental
7. airy, an intelligent pop song
8. slow, a tender ode to beauty
9. folksy neighborhood feel
10. relaxed, melancholy & hurt
11. infectious melody; you’ll hum it
12. subdued reconciliation song
13. upbeat and warm, a fitting end
