THE NEW MASTERSOUNDS – “This is What We Do”
3 on the B, 2005

Tight old-school funk from Britain, with healthy dollops of soul-jazz and a little blues mixed in. It’s all instrumentals and all live (no samplers or turntables required, thank you), with a solid 60s/70s sound that’ll make you think of The Meters. The core quartet is guitar/keys/bass/drums, but Karl Denson adds some sax licks on #4, and Sam Bell lays down a percussion carpet on 3 & 9. A rollicking good time!

FO’S PICKS: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 12
