HORACE X – “Strategy”
Omnium, 2005

UK – Horace X continues to develop their uniquely wacky mélange of bouncy funhouse sounds: ragga-style vocals, sax & clarinet honks, furious fiddling, and irresistible dance beats. Not quite as wild as their (awesome) last album, this one nevertheless offers plenty of good clean head-scratching fun.

FO’S PICKS: 1, 2, 6, 7

1. 4:22 – uptempo slither: steady monotone vox, reggae-tinged beat
2. 4:41 – YES! fast fun bounce, nice Galician flute/fiddle riff mixed in
3. 4:12 – an audio roller derby, darts in & out of a fast electronic beat
4. 6:06 – exotic string intro, slap bass & vox like a funky square dance
5. 5:26 – midtempo: dancehall reggae meets a maudlin gypsy band
6. 4:31 – like a kiddie show: klezmer-y klarinet, silly vocal, perky fiddle
7. 5:15 – fast instrumental with pop energy, fiddle & clarinet solos
8. 4:40 – relaxed keyboard/sample start, then add funky/bluesy layers
9. 4:31 – remix of #5: harsher electronic edge + dub & soul elements
