LUCIANA SOUZA – “Duos II” Sunnyside, 2005

BRAZIL/USA – Voice/guitar duets. Souza, one of the finest of the new generation of Brazilian vocalists, has deep bossa nova roots and a true jazz (rather than just “jazzy”) musical sense. This is her second album of this sort (Brazilian Duos came out in 2002). The four guitarists (Romero Lubambo, Marco Pereira, Swami Jr. & Guilherme Monteiro) all make great companions for Souza’s warm alto voice. I prefer the upbeat numbers, but the many sad ballads all have a lot of melancholy depth.

FO’S PICKS: 1, 2, 4, 6, 11 (and 7, but only if you really like scatting!)

1. 3:02 – fast, happy, flowing melody
2. 4:00 – tender, dramatic. Great solo.
3. 4:45 – gentle medley, floating vox
4. 2:50 – upbeat samba, good scat
5. 3:29 – sweet classic, elegant & sad
6. 4:27 – soft ballad, excellent vox!
7. 3:49 – quick tempo, all-scat vocal
8. 5:48 – sleepy Ivan Lins ballad
9. 5:42 – aching tune, guitar patterns
10. 2:54 – light melody, scat vocal
11. 2:46 – slow, soft, simple ballad
12. 3:34 – slow, haunting, elec. guitar
