Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2005-09-10 | ||
Staid and soft mainstream jazz, based heavily in standard forms. Very '50s cocktail-lounge feel at points. Trumpeter Rava made his name with some gently spacey explorations on the ECM label -- music not far from early, non-standards Keith Jarrett -- but he's shown more interest in straight jazz lately. Still, his stuff carries a nice European air, and his appetite for adventure hasn't completely faded. If I might vent for a moment, I have to note that "Surrey with the Fringe" is the worst -- and I really mean THE. WORST. -- standard in the book. Rava does a decent job turning it into a merely loungy ride, but it's an unfortunate choice of song no matter what the setting. 1- Mellow/pleasant, loungy '50s feel. Quietly cooking. 2- Bouncy mid/fast, but soft. Corny standard, avoidable. 3- Slow, w/evil-circus air in main theme. Nicely weird trumpet solo 4- Happy bop, mid/fast 5- Slow but upbeat 6- Mid/slow, '60s exotic feel 7- Whimsical, mid/fast, quite the retro pop feel 8- Late-night soul. Bright, spare horns over wandering bass 9- Bouncy mid/fast 10- Midtempo, fairly quiet with a touch of attitude 11- Retake of #4. |
