Khan Jamal 5tet – Black Awareness
Khan Jamal teams up here with fellow Philadelphian Grachan Moncur III for a laid back modern bop session. Nothing groundbreaking here, just some nice, easygoing swinging solos. Moncur seems to still be trying to recover from his medical problems, but Byard Lancaster on sax gets some nice solos on top of the solid rhythm section of Taylor & James.
*1. Light med tempo Monkish swing
2. Cautious, exploratory swing
3. Slow, gospelly blues
*4. Driving bop propelled by the vibes
5. Chiming steel drum-like vibe solo
*6. Med tempo, with nice solos
7. Speedy beat with poetry/singing
