Instrumental surf music. A kick-ass, DIY solo project by this local multi-instrumentalist. Unpretentious, very musical, and great sound. Excellent, subtle playing on guitar, drums, and bass. Geez. and this guy’s too busy with school to even put this record up for sale. A surprise of the kind you can only get here at KZSU—Mr. Woodhams sent the record to us directly and it’s not available anywhere (as I write this, anyway). FCC clean. All tracks kick butt. Start with 2, 3.
1. The least surfy track on the record. More like the band Boston, oddly enough. Lots of twin lead. Starts with slow guitar arpeggio, then heavy drums. Fades, then ends with 3 secs of silence.
==> 2. High energy, straight-ahead surf. Very tasty, from the harmonic guitar flourishes to the cymbal muting. Starts with 2 secs of silence. Ends with cymbal crash, then 3 secs of silence.
==> 3. Slightly dark & spooky surf. Beautiful chord fades and the perfect touch of reverb. Ends on suspended note, then 5 secs of silence.
4. Surf motif but uses nylon-string guitar and synthetic percussion. Starts with 4 secs of silence, then solo guitar. Gets busy and intense before quieting again at end. Ends with flanged guitar, fades, then 3 secs of silence.
5. High energy, straight-ahead surf. Nice dynamics. Cool, sorta loose drumming and power chords. Lead uses doubled notes to great effect. Starts with amp noise then drum-stick hits, then full band. Big crash at end, then some amp noise, then some silence.
6. Driving surf ballad. Borrows melodic figure from Neil Young’s “Like A Hurricane.” Starts with drum-stick hits, then full band. Ends with big tremolo bend, fade, then 4 secs of silence.
7. Down tempo surf pop. On the sweet side but so tasty. Starts with flanged solo guitar arpeggio. Ends with slow fade, then 3 secs of silence.
