Album Review

Sweetly demented electronic/acoustic pop. Predominant female vocals are like a thinner-sounding late Billie Holiday, or David Sedaris if he sang. Lots of chimey sounds, acoustic guitars, sustained chords, and soft noise. Gentle arrangements and provocative story-telling lyrics are like a slightly less skillful, more electronic Joanna Newsom. On the other hand, the mix of electronic beats and sweet acoustic instruments are reminiscent of Emily Wells, but less neo-Klezmer. Check out the unicorn porn on the album cover. My favorites: Tracks 2 & 5. FCC’s: 1, 3, 4, 12? –Anna Charlotte

Track 1: FCC: fuck-up (2:01 from end). Starts with distant electric guitar wailing, electronic chimes come in after a few seconds. Chantlike childlike husky vocals. (4:10)
Track2: ***Gentle, lullabyish high male vocals interweave with female vocals, subtle drum machine beat. High forceful piano. Story about outcasts. Lovely. (4:37)
Track 3: marginal FCC: bitch (1:56 from end) Chimes and static. Phone sounds, distant vocals. Gentle acoustic guitar. “Someone’s baby boy ain’t comin’ home tonight.” (4:09)
Track 4: marginal FCC: piss (2:48 from end) Nursery toy sounds, chimes, and what sounds like a saw. Percolating rhythms. Fanciful lyrics about history as it is told to children (and death). (4:14)
Track 5: **Music box-like sound. Serene melody. Static-y vocals: “I fell in love with a bad bad man.” (3:54)
Track 6: Trance-like, lugubrious. Spoken French, sung English vocals translate. Interesting bubbly percussion. (3:39)
Track 7: *Quiet intro, with intermittent a capella vocals and static. Cheesy 80’s beatz. Low chords and lovely sung vocals interspersed the usual chant-like ones. “Noah’s Ark came to my house one day / with all his animals / and he took me away.” (4:13)
Track 8: Piano chords, distant vocals, very short (0:34)
Track 9: *Sing-song vocals in intro. Low organ chords. Tambourine. (4:03)
Track 10: High tentative piano, crooning and wobbly vocals, jungle sounds. “Cuando el sol cambia su color.” (4:38)
Track 11: Quiet intro—hummy vocals and creaking sounds. Gentle electric guitar chords. French rap. Quiet female vocals in background become lovely soprano descant. (4:06)
Track 12: FCC?: no naughty words, but fairly explicit. Childlike vocals, gentle acoustic guitar. (2:08)
