Ok, a CD of music I can review. Reviewing history is harder. This music chronicles the music that helped bring the Chicano/Mexican Hispanic/Latino(a) movement to the notice of the Anglo world. Songs range from strike songs of the farm workers to songs about Vietnam to some familiar civil rights anthems. Sound quality varies, as some tracks were recorded at meetings or rallies. The booklet is fascinating, as is the music. I love this CD. *1. Fun, toe-tapping civil rights song w/great guitar. 2. Children’s chorus on a bright classic w/strings. 3. Live from a UFW meeting. Uptempo singalong w/crowd. *4. Passionate vocals urging stickers to hold firm. Fast, soaring. *5. English spoken intro, bouncy mid, driving song of picket sign. *6. Bouncy, Spanish version of “We Shall Not Be Moved.” *7. Bright, playful children song sound. 8. Warm corrido in honor of Cesar Chavez. 9. Vox/guitars/accordion. Slow, elegant. *10. Upbeat blend of voices/guitars. *11. Cedar flute/guitar/great vocals. Down/mid, very powerful. 12. Light w/a Caribbean influence. A sweet, bright sound. *13. Rich vocal harmonies/a Cuban beat, midtempo. Cool. 14. The band that became Los Lobos. Fast, folksy, fun, energetic. 15. Accordion-driven conjunto w/a bright sound & serious lyrics. 16. Lazy English/Spanish vocals, guitar. 17. Great vibes, guitar. English spoken word about creating a park. 18. English spoken intro/lyrics, sounds of combat. Slow anti-war. 19. Bright, bouncy w/odd melody. Don’t trust Americans. |
