WORLD MUSIC alert!! This is #20 in the awesome "Ethiopiques" series ...

Boston-based big band plays jazz interpretations of Ethiopian songs, with Ethiopian guests -- including Mulatu Astatke (who did the soundtrack for Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers) and a few spotlight vocalists.

Contemporary jazz feel throughout, with many of the songs coming across as nearly Latin jazz. Liner notes document the E/O's trip. A nice document of what must have been a special series of concerts.

DISK ONE
1- Minor-key crime jazz, mid/fast w/long percussion intro.
2- Fairly quiet but still fast, kind of Latin. Long bass solo.
3- Chugging happy beat. Cool soprano sax solo.
4- Slow, grand, intense
5- Easygoing mid/fast mellowness. Snaps into Latin mode.
6- Rich gospel slowness, w/quavering male vocal

DISK TWO
1- Horn piece. Medieval classical feel.
2- Tango! Fun piece w/ vocal
3- Electric piano, for a jamming '70s feel. Gets into a raging percussion jam.
4- Sparse bass solo
5- Slow song w/fem. vocal, powerful and eerie
6- Ayler-like stomp, joyful, w/some pauses
7- Starts w/ twining, almost Asian theme. Gets into a slinky fast electric-piano groove. Lower fidelity sound.
