NAWAL – “Live Acoustic: Musée Dapper, Paris”
Art et Moin, 2005

COMOROS – Hot on the heels of Nawal’s very fine album (Kweli), comes this little EP of live tracks recorded in Paris by an acoustic trio: Nawal on vocal, guitar, and gambusi (sort of like a banjo), plus bass and mbira/ percussion (plus a guest guitarist on #2). For the geographically challenged, Comoros is a small cluster of islands in the Indian Ocean, near the east coast of Africa. So there’s a laid-back Africanized vibe to the music. There’s also a long video on the disc, but this is radio so I don’t care.

Fo’s picks: 5, 2, 3

1. 3:08 – slow, just guitar/vocal. A serious sound with a bit of heartache.
2. 5:03 – mbira (thumb piano) pattern with steady guitar/bass, strong vocal.
3. 5:18 – tricky vocals, with relaxed guitar & booming bass; rough-edged, very live
4. 5:13 – midtempo: a loose, almost sloppy sound, faster drum/chanting at end
5. 5:36 – buzzy mbira/drum/guitar pattern, bowed bass, quiet spoken vox
