Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2005-12-19 | ||
Abstract free improv, a quartet of piano, sax, bass, drums. All are British veterans of the genre, outstanding musicians, and the results are fantastic. Highly recommended, really strong stuff. 1- (time 29:11) A high-energy romp that doesn't let up much. Dives right into a midtempo pelting that quickly gains energy. Around -22:30 to -17:00, simmers into a heavy piano solo, then a sax solo that reignites the energy. -17:00 to -12:00: Calmer but still high-energy; -12:00 starts a slower but still forceful segment. -8:00: starts reheating, til -4:10, a quiet fast drum solo that's short but incredibly deft. Last few minutes fluttery, fast. 2- (time 34:47) Quiet, slow, looming start, into a slow-simmering heat with steadily fast drums, for the first 10 minutes or so. About -24:00 to -16:00: Faster, aggressive phase. -15:00 to -9:00: Quieter; piano solo that builds to a soft/quick, almost loungy jazz phase. -9:00 to -3:00: Mid-level aggression, a nicely thick forest including some prepared piano. Very quiet ending. |
