Your Imaginary Friend Reviewed 2006-01-05 | ||
Re-release of snotty generic 1982 English punk band. But wait! They are still kicking it and this cd actually has 28 tracks, the last half of which are newly recorded versions of the old songs, right in order. The old stuff is quintessential crusty England sound. No “oi” here, just straight chug beats, heavy anti-war themes, anti–boredom/anti-doll. The music is plodding and slow compared to what was happening in LA and DC at the time. The drums seem almost barely played, the antithesis of Black Flag/DOA chuck biscuits/ROBO pounding. Most songs sound alike I must say, what we called “generic” back in the day. The newer stuff has clearer production as might be expected and the drums have had 20 years of “improvement”. Note: ALL SONGS EXCEPT THOSE NOTED BELOW CONTAIN FCC VIOLATIONS 2) upbeat 2/4 3) metal crunchy intro gives way to 2/4, “fucking” in chorus but is indecipherable (to me at least) 5) a bit more urgent 8) title track, with a chanting bridge and LA-HxCx style guitar leads 9) upbeat with decipherable anti-war lyrics 10) good lyrics, but indecipherable 12) epic rock intro launches into urgent punk, FCC is indecipherable 13) somehow more melodic and fun with guitar rockets and sloppy drums 14) another anti war theme, wall of sound 16) straight up 17) epic slow rock intro launches into faster near thrash 19) near gallop with chantlike back ups in chorus 22) upbeat near chug re-make of title track 24) more chugging heavy rock 27) another big chug rocker 28) metal-ish riffs start off, epic chanting and overall feel |
