Jason Forrest – Shamelessly Exciting (Sonig)
Not exactly mashup but close. A slicing, dicing and sampling of 70s, disco, punk, classic rock, soul, and prog where the samples are obvious and discernable. All this combined with some IDM and drum-n-bass beats and even a few non-sampled instruments (David Grubbs on Piano on #1 and Maja Ratkje on vocals on #10) and voices. You’ll hear Blondie, Joan Jett, Neil Young, the Ramones and many more.
1. Distorted organ into a crazy looped guitar solo and drum-n-bass beats. Lots of cock rock power chords and funny solos.
**2. Odd cheap beat and lots of Blondie samples. Throw in a little Spanish guitar.
**3. Lots of 70s punk chopped up and put together! The title says 36 of his favorite punk songs but I’m not sure I heard 36. Ramones, The Clash, and Sex Pistols just to name a couple.
4. Simpler beat and acoustic guitar jangle, which turns into lots of blues guitar samples over beats.
5. Easy listening electronics and boring vocals. This is awful and I can’t tell if it’s supposed to be awful.
**6. Oh is that Kansas I hear? And a quick guitar lick from Joan Jett over the top of drum-n-bass. This is incredible. Sort of a mashup.
7. Some soft jazz sound over almost IDM beats. Gets noisy and chaotic at the end.
8. Light rock 70s sounds turned over disco beat with some southern rock guitar licks over the top. This is driving me crazy because I can’t place the songs he’s sampled but they are drilled into my memory from 70s AM radio. “Afternoon Delight” is one of the tracks for sure.
**9. Odd big beats, into sampled 70s brass instruments. Is that from Shaft? Oh and he lifts a riff from “Spinning Wheel”.
**10. Odd keyboard loop into southern rock riff. Crazy, improvised vocals in the background from Maja Ratke. Fast drum-n-bass beats and many other samples. Gets noisy in the middle and when you think the track is over it goes into more pure drum-n-bass and eventually returns to the opening sounds.
Good stuff. -mph
