Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2006-02-20 | ||
Jazz/classical fusion, a high-spirited attack that works well. Quite avant-garde sounding with lots of improvising, with some joyous cutting loose of the 10 piece orchestra. Highlighted players include some jazz-related folks: Ellery Eskelin (sax), Dominic Duval (bass), Malcolm Goldstein (violin). Lambert himself turns in some aggressive drum solos. Awesome stuff packed with energy; every track is great, although 1 and 11 are a bit calmer. Tracks 1-5 are an orchestral suite (tracks don't segue). 6-12 are group improvs. 1- Calm intro with composed orchestral lines. Jazzy sax/drum start 2- Fast dissonant violins. Cuts abruptly into sax solo, then flowing, slow orchestra 3- Fast, dramatic. Yes!! 4- Showcase for solos: Fast violin and sax; later, calmer bass 5- Playfully thunderous and fast. Includes drum solo. 6- Stomping chaos, sax and drums in front (sort of) 7- Skittery violin. Fast, with bass and flashy drums 8- Fast knotty sax 9- Fast violin/drums 10- Drum solo, snappy and fast 11- Slow start into slowly unfolding orchestral chaos. Sax and drums add to a gentle finale. The sound is typical of orchestral impov projects -- cf. the London Improvisers Orchestra in our library 12- Rattly sax/drums. Fast, with orchestra later. |
