Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2006-04-21 | ||
Free jazz trio with Tim Berne (sax), Drew Gress (bass), and Tom Rainey (drums). Two long improvised tracks that hold a jazzy center through well played epic journeys. These guys have played together for years in this and other settings, and the way the just sort of *step* into the beginning of #1 shows the kind of rapport they've developed. This is basically a live recording from one show, so you get a feel for how they operate. Has the feel of well told stories. 1- Starts in a casual saunter, much like a regular composition. First half is upbeat, before it slows up for a long quiet stretch building to a frenzied ending. 24 minutes. 2- A conscious departure from track 1, starting in a slow, quiet, tribal-meditation zone. The spell is broken by dark, menacing drums that suddenly raise the volume and temperature. Halfway through, the band cools down, settling into an almost funky, steady beat -- Rainey on drums has really controlled the pace and mood to this point -- into a deft, quiet bass solo. Then they build up to another dramatic ending. 25.5 minutes. |
