Contemporary Theremin works, avante classical compositions in the progressive vein of the 30’s. Some songs with full orchestral accompaniment, some solo Theremin, some duets or chamber pieces, one is pure electronic noise, but all songs dissonant, interesting, dark and pensive at times. Kavina studied with Theremin from a young age (check the photo in the liner notes!) and is surely on her way to being synonymous with Clara Rockmore (“the queen of the theremin”, from the 20’s). Unlike Rockmore, Kavina’s style is less evocative of the human voice and explores the instrument’s unique tones and timbre. Excellent liner notes, a must for anyone not familiar with the instrument. 1) sad high melodic tone, piano duet pretty 2) dissonant piano, complex, low theremin tones, very “modern” in a 30’s way 3) mellow and pretty, theremin in forefront 4) solo theremin, but dubbed layers, brief, cool sci fi 5) symphony accompaniment, predominates, theremin is a contributor to this dramatic, cinematic composition 6) sparse duet w/ piano 7) sparse pretty duet with piano 8) experimental noise almost, very low tones and cymbal scrapes, super cool turns spy feel 9) somewhat sparse sad piano duet 10) sparse with female vocalizations, piano, very avante 11) some near harsh electronic sounds burst along with Theremin, electronic entirely 12) very experimental, old school Moog tones abound, noisey with found sound samples buried, supercool! Watch ending, theres a studio sound snippet at very very end (can edit out) |
