MICHAEL WATERS – “Famous in Mongolia”
Ladybird, 2005

ACOUSTIC GUITAR – Solo instrumentals album by a Canadian player with a really distinctive style. He says he was influenced heavily by the remoteness of his British Columbia home and traditional Peruvian music, along with players like Leo Kottke and Mike Oldfield. That can indeed be heard but this is above all a very personal album, relaxing but compelling.

Fo’s picks: 1, 2, 4, 7

1. 04:12 – a beautiful bell-like pattern reflected in meditative passages
2. 12:58 – bluesy themes separated tumbling breaks, intensity rises and falls, but the middle section is quiet and peaceful
3. 03:11 – melody flutters and rolls over steady pulse, starts quiet, louder middle
4. 05:16 – spare, grows heavy with a steady, rustic rhythm, then spacious
5. 14:45 – slow, meditative, mostly very quiet: explores a series of little rolling thematic patterns, surges at the end
6. 06:29 – slow and spacious, with a latin touch: melodic lines against deep tones
7. 05:53 – nice backwoods feel, open & friendly, turns introspective later on
