SEPTETO RODRIGUEZ – “Baila! Gitano Baila!”
Tzadik, 2005

Fun, appealing hybrid of Latin rhythms and Jewish harmonies, with a spirited but impeccable band led by percussionist Roberto Juan Rodriguez and some very nice arranging by same. The pieces tend to be layered, active and happy. A great listen, perfect sunny-day or weekend-morning music. Recommended!

Fo’s Picks: I love every track!

1. 4:48 – upbeat & bubbly: good violin/trombone/clarinet breaks, cute organ
2. 3:52 – sweet Cuban melody with a bit of gypsy harmony, languid solos
3. 6:55 – desert rhythm, sweeping strings, lowdown horn solos, organ break
4. 6:18 – perky clave rhythm, informal jam feel with a bit of mystery in melody
5. 2:58 – sexy tropical-hideaway sway, overlapping phrases give it a shifting air
6. 3:49 – upbeat Peruvian folkdance feel, rustic flute & gypsy violin
7. 5:31 – sort of an old Mexico-meets-caravan mix, steady rhythm, builds at end
8. 4:48 – really tight interweaving of Latin/Jewish strains, upbeat and dancey
9. 5:30 – relaxed sway, loose trombone, slightly melancholy solos & accordion
10. 11:04 – uptempo street festival feel, busy beat, loose solos, somewhat edgy
