The Bawd Of Euphony
Reviewed 2006-02-21
There is a lot of buzz going around about Ariel Pink and frankly I didn’t quite understand it all until I sat down with House Arrest and really listened to what is going on. Underneath the lo-fi beats (all made with his mouth apparently) and instrumentation is brilliance seldom coupled with the lo-fi genre (Sebadoh and GBV come to mind as others). The best way to describe the sound is image a madman performing the 1980’s catalogue of The Kinks through a micro cassette recorder, At times goofy an insane and at other times poppy and gorgeous and always just a little left of center. Imagine if Lou Barlow and Frank Zappa started a band but only recorded on a 4track! Maybe Ariel did too much acid, maybe he’s just a fucking genius but what I do know is that this cat is prolific (200-300 master tapes since 1995). This his second release on the Animal Collective’s paw track label (he apparently just gave them a CD at a show in LA). This CD has a bite for everyone, be patient and listen for the creamy goodness.-tHE bAWD oF euphony
