WINARD HARPER – “Come into the Light” Savant, 2004 Solid live set of hardbop/postbop from drummer Harper and his sextet. The music is straightahead but packs a punch. There are lots of drum/percussion breaks, but they’re always tasteful. Patrick Rickman’s sweet ‘n’ sour trumpet work is a highlight throughout. Songs tend to be short and to the point. Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 6, 11-12 2. 7:04 – upbeat hardbop stomp, good trumpet & perc breaks, latin twist in middle 3. 5:27 – Freddie Hubbard classic, rendered nicely as sunny-day rolling soul 4. 4:41 – sneaky theme, propulsive rhythm, solos a bit stumbly 5. 7:58 – midtempo ballad, for trio: uptown piano, mellow bass solo 6. 5:11 – Blakey-esque groove, long intro: strong trumpet, band in the pocket 7. 5:40 – gentle Tommy Flanagan tribute: tasty piano, short horn solos 8. 4:01 – uptempo burner: careful sax, winding trumpet, blocky piano 9. 5:47 – very romantic ballad: band really caresses the melody 10. 6:54 – midtempo Basie standard, a cute sashaying swing 11. 2:41 – rolling balafon & percussion, very African sound. This is the intro to… 12. 5:51 – low African groove picks up steam, transitions to an urban strut 13. 7:11 – loose swinger, long solo for trumpet, also soprano sax & bass, fade out [Fo] - 3/14/06 |
