PIERANUNZI / JOHNSON / BARON – “Play Morricone”
CamJazz, 2004

No, this is not spaghetti western music! These are straight-jazz trio renditions of tunes – mostly ballads – written by the great Italian film composer Ennio Morricone from 1964 to 1996. E.M.’s oeuvre is vast, going way beyond those guitar-laden western scores, and this trio plays his music with great sensitivity. Pieranunzi’s bright, confident piano playing makes the music all his own. Nice!

All good. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 8, 10

1. 7:18 – aching ballad, midtempo, very soft and pretty
2. 5:29 – upbeat bop romp with a certain swagger, everybody has a good time
3. 7:37 – throbbing midtempo waltz: bass solo in middle, active drums
4. 6:31 – midtempo ballad w/quirky theme, thoughtful playing all around
5. 6:22 – slow, hushed, cinematic ballad: the most evocative piece on the disc
6. 4:38 – solo piano: pretty, sweet, and melancholy
7. 6:30 – fine late-night ballad, picks up a gentle strolling rhythm
8. 5:43 – ballad with slightly askew melody: hints at strange, dark secrets
9. 4:42 – upbeat, propulsive, cute melody, strong piano solo, breakdown
10. 6:02 – sophisticated, carefully nuanced, nice harmonic shadings & tempo shifts
