Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2006-05-24
Old 1960’s guitar-bass-drums rock from Croatia, er rather Iron Curtain era Yugoslavia. Recorded live, very low-fi, comes across initially like instrumental hippie jams a la Hendrix and the Band of Gypsies, funky-bluesy noisey, psyche, and avante, but according to Zdenko (the record label) this guy went on to be “the first punk” in those regions, which is probably pretty respectable as that moniker might have gotten you killed around there, or at least “disappeared”. As the CD progresses what came across as funky jammy starts to become dissonant and disjunct, a predecessor to punk. Interesting stuff if not a tad jammy and hippie, but fans of Hendrix, Tortoise, and other bands that ever found themselves noodling around a trip should take note. Just enough restrained vocals to keep it tasteful but recognizable as foreign, very exotic tongue.

1) very Hendrix jammy, shortest one at 3:14
2) again, mindful trippy, kinda post-rock in a way
3) slower, more introspective
4) riffy slow start, very low fi band of gypsies type jam
5) upbeat with a melodic bassline and jazzy guitar chords and drum feel, more proggy than hippie
6) jazziness upped a notch, clearly exotic tongue in near spoken delivery, great slow breakdown at end
7) slow hip-grind swing, funky bluesy
8) funky jazzy, pensive
9) cool bass riff, melody, dark, nice guitar tone, can hear some proto-punk dissonace in here
10) funky feel, dissonance and punk angularity coming through
11) slow dissonance, sparse melodic
12) somber ballad feel, descending chords
13) mid paced funk rock
14) noodly, very proto-post rock
