Fast jazz that rocks hard; twisty Ornette-like composing; odd time signatures; bright, menacing guitar next to aggressive, wailing sax. It's not just exciting for being loud and fast; they've also got the pinpoint control of a top-notch bebop combo, a good sense of swing (when they choose to use it), and brainy writing (the music, not just the titles).
Think Naked City with more jazz, or Flying Luttenbachers infused by math rock. And they're even better live; it's like being punched in the face repeatedly, in a good way. Fuck, I love these guys -- play this til your ears bleed. No FCCs, but be careful not to say the title of track 4.
1- Mid/fast, rocking, odd time. Guitar wailing later.
2- Drunken two-sax melody; metal guitar. Really ROCKS later.
3- Declaratory intro, into fast surf/prog/punk buzz
4- Slow, tender eardrum-splitting screeches. Later, fast buildup to the ending.
5- Menacing Western-movie music, slow feel. Ferocious noisy solo.
6- Fast, Klezmery chase-scene music, after long tense intro. Killer bass solo towards the end.
7- Metal again!
8- Slow feel, a rambling march of long, tangly melodies.
9- Fast evil swing. Multiple phases; gets a big, dire sound.
10- Happy, bouncy, complicated. Later, a calmer modern-classical interlude.
