Yat-Kha, Albert Kuvezin and – Re-Covers (Yat-Kha) Reviewed by Sadie O., 7/4/06 Covers of mostly rock classics in Tuvan throat singing and mostly traditional instrumentation and style. Check out how diverse his tastes are! This is sick crazy cool, that’s all there is to it. Play with everything – this is not just “World”… You will notice that nothing has less than 3 stars. That’s only because I thought it would look silly to put 10 stars by everything. This might just be the COOLEST RECORD EVER RECORDED. It’s a bit hard to tell, but I think there’s an FCC (“fuck and fight” on track 8. Listen and use caution before airing… 1. 6:02 ****When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) Starts with Tuvan harp and drone, then midtempo loping groove 2. 1:44 ***Man Machine (Kraftwerk) midtempo and menacing with lots of mouth harp 3. 4:30 ****Ramblin Man (Hank Williams) slow drum and strings – the Hank from the Dawn of Time 4. 3:51 *****In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (Iron Butterfly) somewhat uptempo bounce and throat noise, crazy fun 5. 3:09 ***Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division) folky, melancholy guitar shows off the great vocals 6. 3:36 ****Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles (Captain Beefheart) great, almost magical midtempo beat, electric guitar 7. 3:11 ***A Song About A Giraffe (Vladimir Vysotskiy) minimalist polka in Russian, folky and strange, with sudden burst of folk gorgeousness in the middle 8. 3:51 ***Orgasmatron (Motorhead) MAY BE FCC AT 2:47 shakers at intro, then rather uptempo with scary vocals 9. 3:26 ***Will You Go, Lassie, Go? (Mc Peake Family) solo throat singing – absolutely insane vocal effects 10. 2:14 ***Toccata (Paul Mauriat) pretty acoustic guitar and hand percussion – no vocals 11. 3:40 ****Black Magic Woman (Carlos Santana version) midtempo, absurdly cool instrumentation, believable vocals 12. 4:49 ***Exodus (Bob Marley) mouth harp and slow rolling groove, interesting “rap”, totally odd moments, then uptempo gallop for last minute or so 13. 2:48 ****Play With Fire (Rolling Stones) downtempo and melancholy and primal sounding 14. 3:50 The Song of Mergen (Alexei Tchyrgal-ool) slow, pretty yet epic-sounding instrumentation, big vocal chorus in Russian. |
