Comedy. Hamburger’s schtick is to be funny by being un-funny. His delivery is self-deprecating and stuffy, but his subject matter is always eyebrow-raising hilarity. Live, he wears a soggy tux and pretents to be drinking about 5 vodkas, like the ghost of Dean Martin stuffed with pharmaceuticals. But the crowds (locally at least) are in on the joke and Hamburger packs places like the Hemlock and gets himself thrown offstage at the Warfield when he takes unsuspecting audiences by surprise. This CD is a very obtuse release where he spoofs a “historical documentary” about a central valley pizzaria where he has his “climb to fame”. Most of it is unfunny, really. But theres a few highlighted tracks where he unloads what we love him most for.
