Art Ensemble of Chicago - Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City

Laid back disc from the long running (40 years!) collective. Several founding members have passed on recently, but Mitchell, Jarman and Moye have kept the flame alive with the addition of new blood on bass and trumpet. They've definitely settled into their role as elder statesmen on the scene, this disc features a lot of great blowing but nothing revolutionary.

Disc 1:
1. Slow, deliberate head, feels a little tired
2. Small, squeaky start builds to busier group work
*3. Loping free bop
*4. Boppy start, gets free in the middle, then slows down near the ned
*5. Funky restrained, segue into #6
6. Abrupt start, med tempo bop w/ band intros

Disc 2:
1. Mellow groove w/ poetry followed by group exploration
*2. Upbeat with great solos
*3. Soft, melodic bell percussion builds into funky groove towards the end
4. Sparse sax start, gets busier, then false ending w/ 5 min left
5. Slow, melancholy
6. Med-temp bop w/ singing & band intros Ben B 8/06
