FCC track 4|
Moody Technopop for the wistful. This is for those who like Radiohead's last few albums: many of the vocal melodies sound almost exactly the same, but they take center stage on this record without the elaboration of the whole band. The vocals are so sweet and sincere throughout and really shine above all the instrumental tracks, which really just provide a backdrop for the vocal performance. Believe it or not, these vocals are even looser than on Radiohead albums: there's more crooning, falsetto wandering and wordless emoting, less punctuation (no kicking screaming Gucci little piggys here). It's no wonder Thom Yorke once called Lali Puna the best band in the world: this album sounds like Scary World Theory meets Amnesiac…which is a good thing.
RECCOMENDED: 1, 2, 6!!!
1*: lulling, constant, with beautiful bittersweet chorus and one short, sparse interlude
2*: constantly midtempo, with heartwrenching crooning coda
3: loopy and vampy, less melodic and more clubby. Kinda boring, the only dud on the album
4 (FCC: "FUCKED UP" in every chorus + "bitchin" in the verse): sorta funky, guitar driven. Sounds like a cover of "knives out" by radiohead.
5: croon driven and spooky: one falsetto vamp + deep low lead vox and bass = creepy cool
6**: bubbly Nintendo pop! Light airy ululation exploration vocals w/ love. Amazing.
7: percussive with glooming synths and deep bass. Shake that ass but scarily so
8: peripatetic robot groove verse with vocals getting all happy victorious in chorus. sounds like the lyrics are political too. Very quiet bridge before groovy outro that ends suddenly.
9: 8 bit syncopation to start soon joined by sad, thick, long synth tones. Sing-songy vox. Then dark sad piano chords. No drums till end when it gets bootylicious.
