Mongolian Taco Reviewed 2006-12-31 | ||
Unique urban confessional folk. Sophisticated/difficult harmonies and interplay between melody and guitar. Vox is condenser mic'd, distinctive delivery, with lots of exaggerated slides, compare to a folk-Tony Bennett?!?! Lyrics are poetically cryptic, literary, and wordy (he manages mostly). There is a strong jazz influence on the chords and the singing style. Times it sounds off, and others really genius. Don't judge quickly. FCC clean. Picks 3,4,5,9,11,1,2. 1-(5:03) Mid. long intro. Vox and guitar. Chormatically descending melody. Jazzy delivery. 2-(5:05) Slow. Elec. gui. long difficult intro. Plaintive. ***3-(2:14) Beautiful. Slow rubato. Celeste. mid/slow. *4-(3:38) Mid. Pleasant. Really cool hooting/howling motif that makes the song notable. *5-(2:58) Gui., clarient and vox interpretation of La Donna E Mobile from Verdi's Rigoletto. Different, and not bad. For 3 instruments a very good arrangement. 6-(4:53) Very slow, elec. gui. About pain, and it sounds that way. 7-(3:37) Flute, glockenspiel, nylon gui. mid tempo. Gentle feeling. 8-(3:01) Brisk start. Relatively sunny guitar. More folky. Its got some hollering! *9-(8:43) Very slow, quiet. Chimes, free roaming acoustic bass, nylon gui. Harmony. Peaceful, dreamy, hymn like, feel. Wind chimes hypnotically throughout. Last 1:00 just chimes! 10-(4:13) Dark mumbly elec. bass & organ starts. Bass & organ slow struts underneath, while vox goes jazz lounge. Last 10 sec. silence. Amusing. *11-(2:25) Quiet humming and nylon gui. Gentle, lulling, calming, more folky. |
